MASTER’S IN FRANCE 2027: ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND COSTS – LATEST UPDATE

France is one of the destinations chosen by many international students who wish to pursue a Master’s degree in Europe. The appeal of studying for a Master’s degree in France comes from its internationally recognized education system, diverse academic programs, and tuition fees at many public institutions that remain relatively competitive compared with those in many English-speaking countries.

However, to properly prepare for a study in France 2027 plan, students need to carefully consider two important aspects: Master’s admission requirements in France and the total costs involved. In particular, tuition fees for non-EU students vary depending on the type of institution, academic program, and each university’s tuition exemption or reduction policy.

In this article, LEAP Vietnam will summarize key information about Master’s admission requirements, tuition fees, living expenses, and financial support options for studying for a Master’s degree in France, while updating the latest figures currently published for the 2026–2027 academic year, giving you a solid basis for planning your 2027 intake.

Overview of Master’s Programs in France

The French higher education system follows the Licence – Master – Doctorat (LMD) structure, corresponding to Bachelor’s – Master’s – Doctorate degrees. Under this system, a Licence program generally lasts 3 years, while a Master’s program lasts 2 years and is equivalent to 120 ECTS credits. After completing both a Licence and a Master’s degree, students obtain a total of 300 ECTS credits.

In general, students applying to a Master’s program need to hold a qualification equivalent to Bac+3/180 ECTS. However, admission to M1 or M2 depends on the student’s previous academic program, field of study, number of credits, and the admission requirements of each institution. Campus France also notes that each institution has the right to establish its own admission criteria and determine whether an applicant’s foreign degree is recognized.

A Master’s program typically combines theoretical knowledge, professional methodology, applied coursework and, depending on the field, may include internships, research projects or a final thesis. Therefore, it is not simply a stage of postgraduate study but also a direct preparation for the labor market or further academic research.

Should You Study Master 1 or Master 2?

In general, international students can apply for Master 1 (M1) after completing a program equivalent to Bac+3. After M1, students continue to M2 to complete their Master’s degree.

In some cases, students who already have an academic background equivalent to M1 or who fully meet the program’s requirements may be considered for admission to Master 2. However, this is not an automatic right simply because a Bachelor’s degree in Vietnam lasts four years. Direct admission to M2 depends on the university’s assessment and the level of compatibility between the student’s previous studies and the program they are applying for.

This is an important point that Vietnamese students should pay particular attention to when planning their Master’s study in France pathway.

Master’s Admission Requirements in France

Admission requirements are not exactly the same across universities and fields of study. A strong application generally needs to demonstrate a clear match between the applicant’s previous qualification, chosen field of study, academic performance, language proficiency, and career goals.

Academic Qualifications and Educational Background

The basic requirement for entering a Master’s program is to have completed a qualification equivalent to a Licence/Bac+3, or 180 ECTS credits. For international applicants, universities assess their previous qualifications and academic background to determine whether they are eligible for admission to the program.

A strong GPA is certainly an advantage, particularly for highly competitive programs. However, it should not be assumed that France has one universal minimum GPA requirement for all Master’s programs. Each university and field of study may set its own requirements.

Language Requirements

If you choose a program taught in French, you may need to meet the French language proficiency requirements established by the university. For studying in France in English, requirements are generally demonstrated through English-language certificates such as IELTS, TOEFL, or other certificates accepted by the institution.

There is no single IELTS score requirement that applies to all Master’s programs in France. Therefore, instead of assuming a fixed requirement such as “IELTS 6.0 for all programs,” students should check the requirements of each specific program.

For those looking to study in France in English, this is one of the first factors to check when building a university shortlist.

Academic Profile and Motivation Letter

A Master’s application is generally not assessed based on academic transcripts alone. A CV, motivation letter, study plan, letters of recommendation, and internship, work or research experience can all play an important role depending on the program.

In particular, the motivation letter should demonstrate a clear connection between your previous academic background, the Master’s program you wish to pursue, and your career goals after graduation. An application with a clear direction is generally more convincing than one that focuses solely on achievements.

Master’s Tuition Fees in France for 2026–2027

This is an area where there have been changes compared with older information commonly found in articles about the cost of studying in France.

According to Campus France, for the 2026–2027 academic year, first-time non-EU students enrolling in Master’s programs at public higher education institutions under the authority of the French Ministry of Higher Education are subject to differentiated tuition fees of EUR 3,950 per year.

Therefore, the figure of EUR 3,950 per year should be used when planning the financial budget for the current academic year, rather than the previous figure of EUR 3,850 found in older articles.

However, international students do not always have to pay this differentiated tuition fee. Some institutions have tuition exemption or reduction policies for non-EU students, while certain categories of students may be eligible for tuition fees equivalent to those paid by French/EU students. Therefore, students should check each university’s policy before calculating their final budget.

For students from the EU/EEA or Switzerland, the Master’s tuition fee at public institutions for the 2026–2027 academic year is EUR 255 per year.

What About Private Institutions?

For private institutions, business schools, specialized schools, or programs such as MSc and MBA, tuition fees do not follow a single nationwide rate in France. Costs can be significantly higher than those of Master’s programs at public universities and depend on the institution, field of study, program duration, and type of degree.

Therefore, rather than providing a fixed tuition range for all private institutions in France, students should check the official tuition fee of each specific program before making a decision.

In particular, programs in business, management, luxury, fashion, arts, or international programs taught in English may have tuition fees that differ significantly from those of Master’s programs at public universities.

Living Costs When Studying for a Master’s Degree in France

In addition to tuition fees, students need to prepare a budget for their daily living expenses. This is usually the category with the greatest variation between cities.

If studying in Paris or the Île-de-France region, rent is generally a greater financial burden. Meanwhile, student cities such as Rennes, Toulouse, Montpellier, Lille, Nantes, or Caen may allow students to manage their housing budget more effectively, depending on the area and type of accommodation.

Major expenses include rent, utilities, internet, food, transportation, home insurance, and personal expenses. Therefore, when planning the cost of studying in France, students should not use tuition fees as the only basis for their calculations.

A more practical approach is to build a budget based on the city and lifestyle. Students living in university residences or sharing an apartment will have different expenses from those renting a private studio. Likewise, students living in Paris will need to prepare a different budget from those studying in cities outside the capital.

Other Fees to Prepare For

One expense that students often overlook when calculating the cost of a Master’s degree in France is the CVEC – Contribution de Vie Étudiante et de Campus.

For the 2026–2027 academic year, the CVEC is EUR 105. Full-time students at eligible higher education institutions must complete their CVEC obligation before enrolling, except in cases where they are exempt.

In addition to the CVEC, during the application process students should also account for expenses such as document translation and notarization fees, application fees if required by the university, visa application costs, airfare, and initial expenses after arriving in France.

It is also important to note that student health insurance in France is no longer charged under the former “student insurance” model. International students can register with the French healthcare system according to the applicable regulations after arriving in France.

Master’s Scholarships in France: What Options Are Available?

If you are concerned about costs, students do not necessarily have to cover the entire amount themselves. France offers various scholarship programs and financial support opportunities for international students.

One of the most notable scholarships is France Excellence Eiffel, launched by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and managed by Campus France. The scholarship targets outstanding international applicants at Master’s and Doctorate levels.

Since January 2026, the Eiffel Scholarship for Master’s students provides a monthly allowance of EUR 1,200. In addition to this allowance, the program also directly supports certain expenses such as international transportation, domestic transportation, insurance, assistance with accommodation, and cultural activities.

The scholarship duration also depends on the student’s academic pathway. For students entering M1, the scholarship may last up to 24 months; for students entering M2, it may be awarded for up to 12 months.

An important point is that Eiffel is not a scholarship that students apply for directly through Campus France. French universities or higher education institutions must receive, support, and submit candidates’ applications through the program’s system.

In addition to Eiffel, students can also look for university-specific scholarships, scholarships offered by educational organizations, Erasmus Mundus programs, or funding opportunities dedicated to specific fields of study and nationalities.

Can You Receive Financial Support When Studying in France?

In addition to scholarships, students in France may have access to certain support policies depending on their eligibility.

One familiar example is CAF, a housing assistance program available to individuals who meet the relevant requirements. The amount of support is not fixed and depends on personal circumstances, type of accommodation, rent, location, and various other factors.

Students may also benefit from preferential rates available to learners in areas such as transportation, culture, sports, and meals at university restaurants.

Therefore, when calculating the cost of studying in France, you should distinguish between listed costs and actual costs after financial assistance and discounts. This can be an important factor in significantly reducing the budget you need to prepare throughout your studies.

Is Studying for a Master’s Degree in France in English More Expensive?

This is a question that many students are interested in.

France currently offers many Master’s programs taught in English, particularly in fields such as business, management, science, engineering, technology, fashion, and international studies.

However, the language of instruction is not the only factor determining tuition fees. An English-taught Master’s program at a public university may have very different tuition fees from an MSc/MBA program at a private business school.

Therefore, if you want to study in France in English, you should compare the academic program, degree type, institution, tuition fees, and career opportunities simultaneously rather than basing your decision solely on the language of instruction.

Is the Cost of a Master’s Degree in France Really High?

Compared with many English-speaking countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, or Australia, France’s public higher education system still offers a significant advantage in terms of tuition fees.

For non-EU students, the public Master’s tuition fee set for the 2026–2027 academic year is EUR 3,950 per year, although some universities may offer tuition exemptions or reductions for international students.

Meanwhile, actual living costs depend greatly on accommodation and how students manage their budget. Therefore, instead of simply asking, “How much money do I need to study in France?”, a more appropriate question would be:

What field will I study, in which city, at which university, and what tuition fee policy does that program have?

This is also why developing a study-abroad plan early can help students become more financially prepared and proactive.

What Should You Prepare for Your Study in France 2027 Plan?

If you are planning to enroll in 2027, you should start preparing early rather than waiting until the application deadline approaches.

First, identify your field of study and select a group of universities that match your academic ability, budget, and career goals. Then, carefully check the degree, language, application requirements, and admission deadlines of each program.

In particular, if you want to study in France in English, check the university’s official website directly to determine whether the program is genuinely taught entirely in English or only includes some courses in English.

Alongside your academic documents, you should also prepare your CV, motivation letter, letters of recommendation, and evidence of internships, extracurricular activities, or work experience if required by the program.

Finally, build a financial plan that includes tuition fees + accommodation + living expenses + CVEC + application and visa costs + an emergency fund. Calculating each expense separately will give you a more realistic view of the total budget you need to prepare.
