STUDY IN FRANCE FOR A MASTER’S DEGREE 2027: REQUIREMENTS, TUITION FEES, COSTS & LATEST SCHOLARSHIPS

Studying in France at Master’s level is becoming an increasingly popular choice among Vietnamese students thanks to the country’s high-quality education, internationally recognized degrees, and diverse range of programs for international students. In particular, with the growing number of English-taught programs in France, students do not necessarily need to be proficient in French from the beginning to pursue postgraduate studies in the country.

However, when preparing for a Study in France 2027 plan, thoroughly researching admission requirements, language requirements, tuition fees, living costs, and scholarship opportunities is an essential step. Below is the key information you need to know if you are planning to pursue a Master’s degree in France.

1. Why Study in France for a Master’s Degree?

France has a diverse higher education system that includes public universities, Grandes Écoles, business schools, engineering schools, and various specialized institutions. It is also one of Europe’s major educational destinations, particularly for fields such as business, management, engineering, science, fashion, design, communications, arts, and hospitality.

One notable advantage of studying in France in English is that international students can choose from many programs taught entirely or partially in English. According to Campus France data, English-taught programs have a significant presence at Master’s level, particularly in Business & Management, Engineering & Technology, Sciences, Environment & Health.

This provides a suitable option for students who want to study in France but do not yet have a strong enough French language background. Nevertheless, learning French remains a major advantage in everyday life, integration, and especially when seeking internships and employment opportunities in the French market.

2. What Makes the Master’s Education System in France Special?

French higher education follows the European LMD system, consisting of Licence, Master, and Doctorat. The Master’s degree corresponds to Bac+5 and is normally completed in 2 years, consisting of Master 1 and Master 2, equivalent to 120 ECTS credits.

Depending on their academic and career orientation, students can choose professional, research-oriented, or combined programs. Some programs focus strongly on practical training and connections with businesses, while research-oriented programs are more suitable for students who wish to continue toward a PhD.

In addition to traditional Master’s programs at public universities, international students can also choose Master of Science (MSc), MBA, Grande École programs, or specialized programs at business schools and specialized institutions. The duration and admission requirements of these programs can vary significantly, so students should check the specific requirements of each institution directly.

3. Requirements to Study in France for a Master’s Degree

3.1. Academic Qualification Requirements

The basic requirement for applying to a Master’s program in France is to hold a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification that meets the requirements of the program.

However, there is no single GPA requirement that applies to all universities and programs in France. Each institution may establish its own criteria based on the field of study, academic performance, the content of the applicant’s previous undergraduate program, and the competitiveness of the course.

Therefore, instead of focusing solely on GPA, applicants should build a profile that demonstrates a clear connection between their academic background, chosen Master’s program, experience, and career goals.

3.2. Language Requirements

This is one of the factors that deserves particular attention when studying in France in English.

For programs taught in French, universities may require certificates such as DELF, DALF, or TCF, with specific levels depending on the program.

Meanwhile, for English-taught programs in France, common requirements may include IELTS, TOEFL, or another English certificate accepted by the institution. However, applicants should not assume that every program requires IELTS 6.0 or that no individual skill can be below 6.0, as actual requirements depend on each university and course. Some programs may require IELTS 6.0, 6.5, or higher, while some institutions accept equivalent certificates or conduct their own English assessment.

Therefore, applicants should carefully check the exact language requirements of their chosen program before submitting their application.

3.3. Academic Profile and Motivation Letter

In addition to academic qualifications and language certificates, a Master’s application in France generally needs to clearly demonstrate the applicant’s academic journey and personal direction.

The Motivation Letter is particularly important because it gives applicants the opportunity to explain why they have chosen the program, why they selected the university, their academic goals, and their career plans after graduation.

For highly practical fields, internship experience, personal projects, extracurricular activities, or relevant work experience can also help make an application more convincing.

4. Is Studying in France in English Easier?

Studying in France in English offers a clear advantage for international students who are not yet proficient in French. Instead of spending a significant amount of time reaching the required level of French before enrollment, students can choose an English-taught program from the beginning.

However, this does not mean that studying in France in English requires no French at all.

In an academic environment, English may be the main language of the program. However, when renting accommodation, handling administrative procedures, communicating with local residents, undertaking internships, or looking for employment, French can still provide a significant advantage.

For students who plan to stay and work in France after graduation, investing in French language learning during their Master’s studies is therefore a strategy worth seriously considering.

5. Tuition Fees for Studying in France at Master’s Level in 2026–2027

According to Campus France, for students from outside the European Union enrolling at higher education institutions subject to differentiated tuition fees, the Master’s tuition fee for the 2026–2027 academic year is EUR 3,950 per year. This rate applies to programs within the relevant regulations and may have exceptions depending on the student’s status or the institution’s policies.

More importantly, from 2026, regulations concerning tuition fee exemptions and reductions for non-EU students have also changed. Some students may still be eligible for tuition fees equivalent to those paid by French/EU students or receive exemptions depending on their circumstances. Therefore, students should check the specific policies of their chosen institution before preparing a budget.

For private institutions, business schools, Grandes Écoles, or specialized institutions, there is no single tuition fee applicable throughout France. Fees can be significantly higher than those at public universities and depend on the institution, field of study, program duration, and mode of study.

Therefore, if the goal is to optimize the budget, students should compare the total cost of each program rather than relying solely on the listed tuition fee.

6. Living Costs When Studying in France

In addition to tuition fees, living expenses are a major part of the budget students need to prepare when studying in France.

Spending levels vary significantly depending on the city. Paris and the Île-de-France region generally have considerably higher housing costs than many other student cities.

According to Campus France’s student living cost information, accommodation costs can vary widely depending on the type of housing and location. For example, in Paris and Île-de-France, private rooms or apartments can be significantly more expensive than in other regions, while CROUS accommodation is generally a more affordable option if students are eligible and able to secure a place.

Food, public transportation, telephone, Internet, housing insurance, and personal expenses should also be included in the budget. Campus France currently states that a full meal at a university restaurant costs EUR 3.30, while scholarship students may benefit from a EUR 1 meal price under applicable conditions.

7. CVEC and Other Fees to Prepare For

In addition to tuition fees, students enrolled in initial education programs in France are generally required to fulfill the obligation related to the CVEC – Contribution de Vie Étudiante et de Campus.

According to official information for the 2026–2027 academic year, the CVEC is EUR 105 per year. Students belonging to certain exempt categories may not have to pay this fee, but they still need to complete the relevant procedure to obtain proof of exemption.

Another important point is that international students in France are no longer required to pay a separate student social security contribution as they were in the past. Students need to register with the French health insurance system in accordance with regulations and may consider supplementary insurance depending on their needs.

8. Can International Students Work Part-Time While Studying in France?

International students holding a student residence permit in France are allowed to work part-time during their studies.

According to Service-Public, foreign students may work up to 964 hours per year, equivalent to 60% of the annual working time permitted under French regulations. If this limit is exceeded, the employer must follow the relevant procedure to obtain a work permit.

However, part-time employment should be considered an additional source of financial support rather than the primary means of covering all study-abroad expenses. Students should still prepare a sufficient budget for tuition fees, accommodation, and living expenses before coming to France.

9. Notable Scholarships for Studying in France at Master’s Level

One of the attractive aspects of studying in France is that international students can access various scholarship opportunities, from the French government and the French Embassy to universities and international programs.

France Excellence Scholarship from the French Embassy in Vietnam

This program is intended for Vietnamese students planning to pursue a Master 2 or Doctorate at French universities and Grandes Écoles.

Priority fields include basic sciences, engineering, economics, management, law and political science, healthcare, sustainability sciences, and social sciences and humanities. According to information currently published by Campus France Vietnam, the scholarship for Master 2 students provides support for a maximum period of 12 months.

An important point to note is that the France Excellence scholarship offered by the French Embassy in Vietnam and the France Excellence Eiffel scholarship are two different programs. Applicants should therefore avoid confusing them when researching scholarship opportunities.

France Excellence Eiffel Scholarship

France Excellence Eiffel is one of the most prestigious scholarships available to international students wishing to pursue Master’s and Doctoral studies in France.

Under the regulations applicable from January 2026, Master’s students receive a living allowance of EUR 1,200 per month. In addition to this allowance, the program also provides direct support for certain services, including international travel, domestic travel, insurance, assistance with finding accommodation, and cultural activities.

The Eiffel Scholarship can provide support for up to 24 months for students beginning in Master 1 and up to 12 months for Master 2 students, depending on the circumstances. Applications are not submitted directly by students to Campus France; the French higher education institution must nominate the candidate.

Notably, the new regulations also confirm that recipients of French Government scholarships may be exempt from tuition fees for certain national degree programs at public institutions within the applicable scope.

In addition to the two programs above, students can also look for scholarships offered by individual universities, Erasmus Mundus scholarships, or other financial support programs. Requirements, deadlines, and levels of financial support vary depending on each program.

10. What Documents Are Required to Study in France for a Master’s Degree?

A complete Master’s application generally includes academic documents and personal documents that meet the requirements of the specific program.

Students should prepare their graduation diploma and transcripts, CV, Motivation Letter, language certificates, recommendation letters if required by the institution, and documents proving relevant academic or professional experience.

For English-taught programs in France, the English language certificate is a component that requires particular attention. If the program requires IELTS, applicants should carefully check both the overall score and individual skill requirements.

More importantly, the application should demonstrate a logical study plan: what you have studied, why you have chosen this Master’s field, why the program in France is suitable for your goals, and how you plan to develop your career after graduation.

11. Preparation Timeline for Studying in France in 2027

If you plan to enroll in 2027, you should not wait until the application deadline is approaching before starting your preparation.

First, identify your field of study and suitable universities, then check the admission requirements of each program. This is also the time to assess your language ability to determine whether you are better suited to a French-taught program or an English-taught program in France.

Once you have a list of target universities, you should complete your CV, Motivation Letter, transcripts, language certificates, and other relevant documents. Highly competitive programs or scholarship applications often require earlier preparation to allow enough time to build a strong application.

For Vietnamese students, the application process may involve Campus France/Études en France, depending on the program and institution. Therefore, it is important to check the exact procedure applicable to your chosen course rather than applying one general process to all universities.

Studying in France in 2027 is a worthwhile option for students who want to access European education, especially as an increasing number of international programs are now taught in English.

To prepare effectively, applicants should focus on three key factors: choosing the right program, building a suitable application, and developing a realistic financial plan. For students who are not yet confident in French, English-taught programs in France can provide additional options, particularly in business, management, engineering, science, and other international fields.

From a financial perspective, the current public university tuition fee for non-EU students is listed by Campus France at EUR 3,950 per year for Master’s programs in the 2026–2027 academic year, while the CVEC is EUR 105 per year. However, exemption policies, tuition fees at individual institutions, and living costs can vary significantly.

Students with strong academic achievements should also proactively explore programs such as the France Excellence scholarship offered by the French Embassy in Vietnam, France Excellence Eiffel, university scholarships, and Erasmus Mundus to reduce financial pressure.

LEAP Vietnam can accompany students throughout the process of exploring programs, choosing universities, preparing applications, and developing a Study in France pathway that matches each student’s abilities, budget, and career goals.
